Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, and in its early stages it can go unnoticed. Recognizing the warning signs and acting early is key to keeping it from progressing.
Gingivitis: the first stage
This is gum inflammation caused by plaque buildup. The most common signs are:
- Red or swollen gums.
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing.
- Persistent bad breath.
At this stage, gingivitis is reversible with good hygiene and a professional dental cleaning.
Periodontitis: when the disease advances
If gingivitis goes untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, a deeper infection that affects the bone and tissue supporting the teeth. It can cause gum recession, tooth mobility, and even tooth loss.
How is it treated?
- Gingivitis: professional dental cleaning and improved daily hygiene.
- Mild to moderate periodontitis: scaling and root planing to remove tartar below the gumline.
- Advanced cases: gum surgery may be needed to restore periodontal health.
Tips to prevent it
- Brush at least twice a day and use floss or interdental brushes.
- Attend regular checkups and cleanings with your dentist.
- Avoid smoking, one of the leading risk factors.
- Manage conditions like diabetes, which increase periodontal risk.
