What are dental sealants?
They are a thin layer of resin applied to the chewing surface of the molars, the area most prone to cavities because of its deep grooves and fissures, which are hard to clean with a toothbrush alone.
How is a sealant applied?
The procedure is quick, painless, and doesn’t require anesthesia:
- The tooth surface is cleaned and dried.
- A gel is applied to prepare the enamel for better adhesion.
- The liquid resin is placed over the molar’s grooves.
- It’s hardened with a special light in seconds.
At what age are they recommended?
Ideally, sealants are applied shortly after the first permanent molars erupt, generally between ages 6 and 7, and again for the second molars, between ages 11 and 13.
How long do sealants last?
With good hygiene habits and regular checkups, sealants can last several years. Your dentist checks their condition at each visit and replaces them if needed.
